Wimbledon 2009: Federer Looks to Break Sampras' Record With Title

Fourteen. The lucky number which Roger Federer got after defeating Robin Soderling in the 2009 French Open for the title. Federer has tied Pete Sampras with 14 titles. The main difference is Federer has a big chance at getting number 15 after only a month's time as he is still continuing to play excellent tennis. Will Roger Federer be raising the Wimbledon trophy this year?


Wimbledon 2009 kicks off this coming Monday, June 22, with a new retractable roof in centre court and the men's singles crown up for grabs to a new champion. Rafael Nadal, world's number one and defending Wimbledon champion has bowed out of the tournament with tendinitis in his knees. Although a sad fact four countless tennis fans who were expecting another epic Wimbledon final between Nadal and Federer, this news could very well be a sign that a tennis record might be broken at the end of this year's tournament.

Roger is now the alpha dog in the tournament, the crowd favorite. But that doesn't mean it's a sure win for the Swiss superstar. Countless challengers are slowly establishing themselves in the game and like what happened with Nadal in the French Open, anything can happen.
